Quick Review – Not what you’d expect from a merlot, but tastes so good as a wine you probably wouldn’t care. 90/100
This isn’t what you’d expect from a merlot, it’s slightly sweet, slightly jammy, and not as restrained as what the French would likely do with this grape.
Then again this isn’t an ordinary wine maker, Charles Smith wines are known for the big block letter labels (it’s like someone permanent marker’d this) and fascinating names. The Velvet Devil tastes as much like a Zinfandel as it does Merlot, less spice, but a bold and delicious texture. At this price, a value that’s hard to beat.
