Freixenet Cordon Negro Brut Cava Review – Spanish Champagne in a Black Bottle

Quick Review – A simple, dry Brut Cava. At under $10, it’s cheap enough to add some juice and make a nice bubbly adult beverage. On its own, it’s better than most similarly priced American sparkling wines, but not spectacular by any means. 83/100

Folks from Champagne probably wouldn’t appreciate me calling this bottle Spanish Champagne, but that’s exactly what Cava is, sparkling wine made in adherence to the classic Champagne methodologies.

freixenet02At under $10 a bottle, there’s no shame in adding some juice to Freixenet (Buy Here)¬†and making a sparkling cocktail. Yet on its own, it’s still better than most of the affordable domestic US sparking wines. Pop bottles, Champagne style, at a fraction of the cost.

freixenet01That said, the tasting notes are rather mundane. Champagne and Cava aren’t as floral or fruity as Prosecco. I taste a slight hint of lemon, and not much else. I wonder how some wine magazines manage to find apples, almonds, peaches, spice, ginger, pears. I think they’re just not allowed to write reviews like me.
